Education & preventative work

Education & schools liaison….

CWA in partnership with Barnardos is delivering sessions within schools across Cardiff on the subject of domestic violence and/or abuse and homelessness.

This very successful service has already delivered over its targets in the first quarter and we have also been invited into harder reach schools, which is a great recommendation for the quality and value of the work being delivered.

Training….

We offer a range of training, including accredited training, to front line staff in agencies and organisations. This has included Cardiff Council housing and neighbourhood renewal staff, trainee Police officers and Social Service and Youth Service staff.

We also deliver training and awareness sessions to youth groups (including university students and student’s union officers), social groups, staff groups, organisations and companies working across Cardiff.

We have off the shelf sessions or can tailor them to meet specific needs.

We offer…

Please see our training leaflets on the factsheets and publications page.

E learning….

As a key stakeholder and partner with our local authority we have been an active member of the development team for this WAG funded demonstrator project.

The E learning package covering domestic violence and/org abuse is available to all council staff as part of their ongoing training (this package can also be extended for use with staff within partner organisations such as housing association).

The package is highly cost effective and staff can be monitored as to their use and progress.

The content is very comprehensive and has been a very successful collaboration between Cardiff Housing and Neighbourhood Renewal directorate and key partners within the third sector.

Youth prevention….

Group work with Young People We will deliver a group work session to your young people. This will focus on exploring what domestic abuse means, how it affects people and what healthy relationships are like. You can have a one-off presentation or workshop, or we can deliver some follow-on sessions. You may want to build our group work session into a wider awareness-raising project you are undertaking, or you may want to increase the understanding of your group because you have noticed some of their relationships and are concerned about them.

1 to 1 sessions with Young people who require specialised advice and information a more specialised or personal service

Young people may be referred to this service if they are unable to access group workshops but would still benefit from the information, if they require more in-depth information following a group workshop, if they have disclosed experiences of domestic abuse, or if you suspect that abuse may be happening.

We can provide these sessions in the company of your staff if that young person is comfortable to do so. We will also come to your facility/ organisation, or wherever there is a safe place, if the young person prefers.

Training Frontline Staff

Whilst we work with your young people we will give a basic introduction to understanding Domestic Abuse training session to any or all frontline staff involved with the project. We want to increase the level of support available to young people and so we need to begin by increasing the knowledge of those who may be able to offer support and information to them. The training will take one day or two half days to complete. Ideally we would like to build your capacity before working with your young people but understand that this is not always possible, so we are really flexible.

We deliver sessions in Schools, Youth Centres, Youth Groups, Support Groups, Housing We will provide 1-to-1 information sessions to young people who may require Projects, etc. We will work with any young people aged 11-25 within the Cardiff area. See our leaflet on the factsheets and publications page

Healthy living & eating….

Thanks to a grant from the Impact Fund we are starting a healthy living & eating project focussed around gardening and vegetable growing.

We are creating vegetable gardens in our refuges and developing an allotment where both current and ex-residents/service users can come together and grow their own.

We are particularly keen to get the children involved and have mini wheelbarrows and gardening tools to suit all sizes.

With vegetables in hand we will also have some fun cooking sessions to get the best out of everyone’s hard work.

Youth DV champions….

This project will recruit young people (up to 25 years) who will receive accredited training to support their work as peer advocate and domestic violence champions for young people. The aims of the project are to raise awareness of domestic violence and/or abuse, its effects and to promote healthy relationships. Changing attitudes toward the prevalence and acceptability of domestic violence and unhealthy relationships is a key driver for this work.

They will deliver awareness sessions to groups of young people and also be able to provide leadership within their communities.

We will be launching this project in the autumn when we recruit a team as part of the future fund project.
